Bassano del Grappa

Four seasons of outdoor adventure

Road Cycling

Monte Grappa has 11 HC climbs converging at the summit. The Brevetto del Monte Grappa awards bronze, silver, or gold. Semonzo: 18.4 km, 1,514 m gain.

Mountain Biking

500 km of marked trails on the Asiago Plateau, including 250 km of circular loops through seven historic municipalities.

Hiking

Three Anelli di Conco start at the door. Monte Fior–Castelgomberto traverses WWI fortifications. Via delle Malghe links working alpine dairy huts.

Paragliding

Monte Grappa is among north Italy's premier sites. Launch points at 1,600–1,775 m with reliable thermals and Dolomite views to the Adriatic.

Winter & Skiing

Asiago offers cross-country and downhill skiing. The plateau becomes a lantern-lit snow world from December to March.

Food & Wine

DOP produce, 1,000-year-old cheese, and Italy's oldest distillery

Local Specialities

  • Asparago Bianco di Bassano DOP March–June. Grown underground in Brenta sandy soils since the 1500s. Sagra festival each May in Bassano.
  • Asiago DOP Cheese Made on the plateau for 1,000 years. Visit 15 working malghe in summer (June–Sept) for fresh Asiago Mountain Product.
  • Soprèssa Vicentina DOP The region's prized cured sausage — pork belly and neck, gently spiced, mildly sweet.
  • Baccalà alla Vicentina Rehydrated stockfish slow-cooked in milk and onions, served on polenta. So important it has its own confraternity.
  • Torresani allo spiedo Breganze's 500-year-old spit-roast squab tradition.
  • Grappa Nardini Italy's oldest surviving distillery (est. 1779), listed as a Historic Place of Italy, at the foot of the Ponte degli Alpini.

  • Breganze DOC First DOC in Vicenza province (1969). Twelve communes. Key varieties: Vespaiolo, Pinot Bianco, Tai, Chardonnay.
  • Torcolato Vespaiola grapes hung from barn rafters for 4 months, pressed into a luminous amber dessert wine. €7.50 a glass. Celebrated each January at the Torcolato Festival.

History & Culture

Millennia of civilisation, one hour from Venice

WWI Plateau

The Asiago Plateau was a major Great War front. Preserved trenches, tunnels, and fortifications line the hiking trails. The Asiago Military Ossuary holds the remains of over 50,000 soldiers.

The Cimbri Heritage

Germanic settlers arrived around the year 1000, leaving a living legacy in local place names, family nicknames, and the Cimbric language still spoken in Roana.

Marostica Living Chess

Every even-numbered September, the main piazza of medieval Marostica hosts a living chess match with human pieces in Renaissance costume.
